A group of seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
