In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking Tehran, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, without initially offer additional information.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Major developments preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
