Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
