Powerful Gales Cause Numerous Homes In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to avoid going out as severe gales lash the nation.

Severe gales hitting speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 homes lacking electricity and compelled authorities to call off more than 100 flights, according to regional news sources.

The winds are affecting the complete South Island and southern parts of the northern region, per the weather forecasting body.

New Zealand authorities have issued uncommon red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in core zones such as Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been urged to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and get ready for more electricity and network failures.

Extensive Impact and Crisis Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting households mostly in the southern region, although authorities say that power was being slowly brought back.

Local media have stated that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, whereas trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the gusts.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was swept into approaching vehicles on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Flights to and from the urban area have been halted because of the gusts, while various routes and public facilities are shut down.

At the same time local leaders have announced a crisis declaration, to facilitate disaster response efforts.

Strike Action Alongside Severe Weather

The wild winds on this day coincide with many of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been termed a "mega strike", requesting better pay and working conditions.

Yet the severe conditions has compelled them to modify various scheduled activities, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or abandoned.

Like conditions are affecting the nearby nation, ushering in a heatwave to the country's outback.

Agencies have issued burning restrictions for apprehension regarding wildfires.
