Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
